Canton Fair, Autumn 2024

In autumn 2024, I made a short trip to Guangzhou, China, to attend one of the world’s largest international trade events. What I stepped into was a massive three-week-long spectacle, held twice a year. This particular edition was the 136th Canton Fair.

Each week of the fair is dedicated to different target groups. This time, my main focus was on steel products. Along the way, I also took a closer look at chemicals and air-to-water heat pumps. In short, the offering truly spans everything from one extreme to the other.

The Canton Fair, China’s largest and oldest trade fair, is astonishing in its scale and diversity. From the moment you enter the exhibition area, it becomes immediately clear why the event attracts over 200,000 visitors from around the world every year. Thousands of exhibitors showcase products ranging from furniture and electronics to clothing and heavy industrial equipment. The fair genuinely feels like a global marketplace under one roof.

The atmosphere at the fair is unique – intense, energetic, and full of momentum. The walkways are crowded, and throughout the halls you can see negotiations, deal-making, and animated discussions taking place. One of the most compelling aspects of the Canton Fair is how many small and mid-sized manufacturers present their products directly to international buyers, often without intermediaries. This creates real opportunities to find exactly the right product, or even to negotiate direct partnerships on the spot.

I started my visit in Area B, halls 9 to 13. With a background in reinforcement and steel, the hardware sections naturally drew me in. I had also scheduled meetings and sample collections with several suppliers in this area. Love for steel, as one reinforcement professional once put it. China’s steel industry is enormous, and many companies were showcasing their latest production technologies and innovations. While quality levels and production capabilities vary, what stood out most was the strong emphasis on energy efficiency and more sustainable manufacturing methods. China has long been a global powerhouse in steel production, and at the fair it was clear that the future is increasingly focused on environmentally responsible solutions.

The air-to-water heat pumps I managed to explore were clearly targeted at European markets. Here too, the trend toward energy efficiency and sustainable energy solutions was unmistakable. This type of technology is developing rapidly in China, and many manufacturers are actively looking to bring their innovations to Western markets.

The fair was not just about products – it was also an excellent platform for networking. I had the opportunity to speak with numerous industry professionals and gain valuable insights into the future of Chinese industry and its role in global markets. It was also a great way to experience different business cultures and meet people from all over the world.

The Canton Fair is a true experience, offering a comprehensive view of how Chinese industry and the broader business environment are evolving. While the scale of the event can feel overwhelming at first, it also provides unmatched opportunities to learn, discover, and build international connections. If you are involved in international business, this is an event well worth exploring.

If there are specific products you are interested in importing from China and need support, feel free to reach out. In upcoming blog posts, I will be sharing more detailed insights into the offerings and opportunities available.
